The most influential teachers for me were Mr. Gish (Physics), Mr. Moore (English), and Coach Tscheannan (PE).   Mr Gish was the really soft spoken intelligent man who put everything on a very understandable level.  I remember the first day I was in his class, when he came in there were lots of conversations and commotion going on, and he had this bicycle horn, and he went over an squesed the rubber ball on the end of it a few times till everyone noticed and quited down.   Never raising his voice, he quietly asked us if we were ready to learn some physics.  No yelling, no chastising any of us, just simple straight forward commuication that I know immediately had my attention and my respect.  Mr Gish was also very good friends with my uncle William Miller (physics teacher, track and cross counstry coach).  When I was in his class I did not know about this relationship, but latter on after I had graduated from college, Mr Gish and his wife attended some of our family gatherings and I had the good fortune of letting him know how much I had thought of him at the time.  What a humble great man.  Mr Moore was quite the personality.  I know most students thought he was wierd, but to me he made everthing come to life.   We read the Scarlet letter in his class.  Sometimes he would read to us and it was like he was all the charaters in the story.   If there was a song, he would start singing as little of the song in his deep baratone voice, he would change his voice to match the characters, he made somthing that if I had simply started reading it on my own would have bored me to death at the time simply come to life.   Unfortunately I never got the opportunity to tell him how much he influenced my life.  After graduating from college I taught social studies at McCluer and although I never considered myself as good of a teacher as these two, I do feel having been in their classes made me a better version of myself.  Coach Tschannon Was such a great man that most probably never got to see the side of him that I did.   He was the AD when I taught there, and I probably could never convey to you how much he cared about all of us.   This is a man that seldom said a unkind word about anyone.   I was friends with his son, and actually coached his younger son Terry.   I kept Terry on my Sophomore basketball team.  First let me say, Terry earned his spot on that team.  Even though I took a lot of ribbing from the other coaches for keeping him.  They thought I kept him because of Coach Tschannon.  But Terry, if you ever read this, I kept you because you hustled your ass off.   I would never ever cut any kid that worked harder than any other kid out there.  Why?  Because effort and hustle is contagious.  Terry may have the the 17th player on my 17 man team that year at the beginning.   Now he never improved enouth to start on this team which was very talented.   They won the state championship as seniors, but he also was not the 17th man on the team when the year ended.  Did I do it for his dad?  Perhaps I did feel like I owed his dad who had done so much for me, but I kept him because he earned.   Its funny but I was sort of told who my starters would be.   But when practice started, a few kids who were not supposed to be in that mix got my attention.  I had another player on that team that just simply out hustled the others.  I knew day one, he was going to be one of my starters.  I will not say his name here since it would not mean anything to you, but if he reads this I am sure he will know I am talking about him.
