Where did you like to hang-out in high school?

Steak N Shake for sure! Funny thing is... every time i return to St Louis, i still have to go hang out there. Course, they do have the best burgers in the world! We don't have Steak N Shakes out here in the west. I don't think there are any west of the Mississippi. I used to hang there with Becky Smith and Deann Zwight.

We just had Steak 'n Shake tonight.  I remember circling the Steak 'n Shake on Lindbergh just south of the Washington/Charbonier intersection.  If anyone pulled out, you had to back in.  I was always terrified I would back in and hit the fence.  Remember the car hops would bring your food out on that little tray that attached to your car window?

My brother lives in Des Moines, IA.  Alas and alack, no S'nS there either.  It's one of the first places he hits when he gets into town.  The other is White Castle.  None of those in Des Moines either.

I don't think the SnS at Lindbergh and Patterson had curb service, did it?

The Steak 'n Shake wasn't at Lindbergh and Patterson.  It was south of Washington/Charbonier. (Now an IHOP.)  It did have curb service.  The one that was built on New Halls Ferry around Parker Spur didn't have curb service.

I think where Chuck-a-Burger was is now the site of the White Castle and that is Lindbergh and Patterson.  We used to go to the Chuck-a-Burger in Ferguson.

Anyone go to the A&W that is now Fritz?  It's by the tennis courts in Florissant just off Florissant Road at St. Catherine Street?

Trish, you're right. I temporarily confused the two.

I went to the A&W a few times. Mary Heintz used to place tennis at those courts. She was really good!

I worked at the Chuck A Burger on Florrisant Rd in Ferguson for about 2 years before graduating and joining USAF.  After work, Brenda Junker, John (can't remember last name right now) (old age) and myself would then drive over to White Castle near airport.  Everytime I return to STL, White Castle in Wentzville is my first stop.  None out here.  I get SnS everytime I go to FLA.  Miss the good ole high school days.

Johnnie, you must have worked with Tom Carter at Chuck-A-Burger. Were you there the night someone shot a bullet through the window? I was.

Welcome to our site!

I was off that night.  There was a biker gang that wore "pink" jackets that started a brawl there with a taxi company owned by some brothers.  I chased one off with a bun board.

Funny - I love the Chuck-A-Burger stories.  I used to go there quite a bit - loved the place, plus we lived close by.  Johnnie,  I can picture you now with the bun board chasing bikers in pink jackets.  What fun we all had back then!

I remember now, the biker gang was called the Brotherhood.  Could never understand the faded pink denim jackets, but whatever, it was the age of peace and love....hehe.  I used to work there with John Shockley, my very good friend, Brenda Junker and good ole Tony Tocco.  I was in St Charles about two years ago and went to a pizza parlor that Tony owns.  Sorry I missed him.  If anyone knows him, tell him John George says hi.  He was my best man at my wedding to Debra Witzke.  She is remarried and still living in STL some where.

Johnnie, I used to work at the same Chuck a Burger our junior year , it made my first class (history with miss Smith @0630) seem to last forever. I remember John Shockley was the asst. manager on one of the nights I worked

Lost track of John Shockley after graduation.  He joined the Navy and I went Air Force.  He and I drove to Daytona Beach during senior year spring break.  I had already enlisted and was pretty sure the tropical paradise of Vietnam was in my future.  One last huraah.  Turned out that once my security clearance came in (Crypto/TS) the war was winding down.  Miss ole John.  But, ole Chuck-A-Burger was a rockin place back then.

In high school since I had come from Berkeley, I knew kids from both schools.  I used to drive back and forth between Lindbergh Steak and Natural Bridge Steak and hope for a parking spot.

I moved to Houston in 1976.  In 1977 two Steak 'n Shakes opened up.  They stayed open less than 2 years but couldn't make it here.  (No curb service either).  Now 35 years later they are back in Texas and expanding quite a bit.  Many are in Dallas and Austin area.  Three in Houston, and No. 4 due to open August 16, 2012!  It is 10 minutes from my house too.

We used to cruise the Circle Steak too but the Lindberg one was the main stopping point - you are right though, sometimes hard to find a parking spot!!!

also religously cruised steak and shake, and White Castle occas. .

Now if I see one on our travels ,It is a must we stop and eat there...no matter where they are. To my husband's chagrin, I have  drug him to S & S in St Louis, Florida  and Texas.  Also have to hit any white castle we cross paths with.  And for those that are traveling and cant get enough belly bombs...a place called Krystal in tennissee is identical to a white castle...  wish they would build one in calif...guess they just cannot get over the rocky mountains...kinda like fire fly's...or robins...

I should be arriving in Wentzville on Friday the 14th.  Much to the spouse unit's chagrin, my first stop will be White Castle.  It always makes her sick.....I guess they are truely an acquired taste.
